First test case: I restarted the date build on crest, carefully watching
top, the build log and the kernel log. It does, in fact, freeze
immediately when starting R:
dh_installdirs usr/lib/R/site-library
R CMD INSTALL -l

The crest and kullervo chroots have been cleaned up, and q650 still hangs.
I'll try the date build on q650 next, before resorting to aranym for
further tests.
