ok, will try it.

ok, i did, with pretty much the same results, Except this time i was
prepared and logged in via ethernet LAN. all is apparently ok, the
date is 1969. the mac-hfs partions mount on the ide disk so apparently
the startup errors don't mean too much (although could i boot off it ?)
BTW those are of the variety "drive ready seek complete error".
the udev filesystem is mounted. the udev errors at boot are prefixed
by "hotplug", maybe it just means i can't hotplug.

still wish i had a console though. it is sort of the reverse of
what i wanted: to be able to sit at the old computer log in to
the new one.

i am not loading anything specific at present that i
know of - i did not change any defaults. by bad keymap
i mean exactly and only that the keys are all mixed up
for example typing r may print t, <cr> print h, some
thing like that. it is the usual english keyboard but it is all mixed up.
