How about adding
alias char-major-10-135 off
to modules.conf for machines that don't have /dev/*rtc? Also, couldn't
hwclock be finally hacked to simply give up and not require ctl-c if
/dev/rtc is not available? Why does it hang, does it access /dev/ports

add "1" or "s" to you kernel args to boot into single mode.
Find the line loading boottime.kmap in the initscripts and
uncomment it, then see if normal boot gets further.
