Thanks, Christian, hfsutils worked like a charm.  Unfortunately
Penguin-18 didn't :-(

I opened Penguin-18, and it managed to find the right kernel, but it
hung up fairly early in the boot process.  I'll post the boot log when
I have more time to play with that machine.  Might it have gotten
confused by the preferences file from Penguin-15?  The same kernel
booted fine with Penguin-15 so there must be some difference in the
settings somewhere, right?

I'll post more info when I have it....
