RE: SE/30 Video Help

Sorry, it ain't going to work. The SE/30 uses a custom, proprietary
display. No simple connection. The SE/30 uses what is called the 'Analog
connector' to connect both power AND display. Your best bet would be to
install Debian on the SE/30, see if you can get X running, and just run an X
Server to the 486.
It would probably just be easier to go pick up an old 14" display from
GoodWill... (Or your local thrift shop, if you're not in the U.S.)

no, No, NO! No 14" monitor. The entire point is to have an elegant little compact mac sitting on the table. :)

Are there any other compact mac's (with a built in 9" display) that I could hack?

As for the whole running X natively task... Has anyone ever attempted to run X on an SE/30? In my opinion, that person should be put on trial for crimes against computers, but seriously, does it run fast? Can it handle running X AND playing up mp3's over the network? Perhaps with an upgrade card? Perhaps one of the faster compact mac's?

As for X server... would someone please point me in the direction of a good resource on running X servers? I have heard about it... (Correct me if I'm wrong), Xserver is to x as telnet is to console? Does it put the load on the client (se/30), or the server? I will need something that obvioulsy puts the load on the server, leaving the se/30 to do as little as possible. This would actually be really really cool. Does it require more then 10MBit ethernet? Hmm...(scratches chin)...basically, it transforms the se/30 to what I want, a terminal mp3 player. Correct me anywhere I'm wrong.

 Subject: SE/30 Video Help

 Hello list...

 I am currently starting a project to set up an se/30 as a monitor for an
 old 486 (that would be under the table). The idea is to have a more
 functioning box run my favorite OS on my favorite 9" monitor... A truly
 ritious hack. Here's where I need help...

 Does anyone have X-config files for that 512x384 2bit resolution?

 Does anyone have any experience playing with the Micron Xceed card?

 <http://lowendmac.net/compact/se30.shtml>

 The idea is that the SE/30 will stand on a table, and serve as the
 monitor for the 486, which will be under the table, and the 486 will be
 hooked up via the network to another server with mp3's on it. The SE/30
 monitor will display Xwindows with an mp3 player. The 486 will be hooked
 up to some descent speakers.

 The 486 part is easy, it's the whole SE/30 monitor thing thats hard.
 (and fun, and cool, and sexy)

 Theres a bit of info from macBSD here: (look for posts called Xwindows
 question starting around 09/02/1997)
 <http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-mac68k/1997/09/>

 I'm about to crack the case on the SE/30 and see how I could setup that
 monitor to plug into a vga adapter. I have mac>vga and vga>mac adapters.

 ANY information about the SE/30's video would be greatly appreciated.
