Kernel for the MVME-162, compiling?

Hello all:
	I am trying to compile from the slink cd set.
Some problems:

1. apt-get update/ upgrade will update apt to an unusable version.

2. kernel compiles fail.
   I want to find the config for the MVME-162 kernel that runs on 
   the cd. None of the sources compile correctly on this setup.

I need to add something to the kernel, so I must recompile, But the 
compile seems fragile.

Any ideas?
