I hate parse-xf86config :-) But I think that's in no way related; if
startx fails there usually is a problem with the X server (in which case
the X startup messages instruct the user to post the full text of the
error messages yadda yadda) or startx isn't installed (xbase-clients
missing).
If the X server attempts to start up it will give meaningful error
messages.

File a bug against Branden ? :-) Seriously, it seems that's a bug in
the FTP archive (James, or ftp.debian.org).
