To make things easier on the porters the newest CVS version will do a few
arch checks when you bring up the help screen, just run apt-get, if it
completes then the byte ordering and integer sizes are ok.

It also prints a banner that should be visually checked, this is what the
bug report was about.

For m68k the 'i386' must read 'm68k'.

Everything else I hope is arch independent, but should be tested.
