Transitions don't look very good in compressed video.
I recommend straight cuts before crossfades.  They look
fancy before the compression, but cause a burst of blocking
artifacts in the compressed video.

 And even though straight cuts may make the poor monitors in
the control booth roll, they do _not_ make the digitised
video roll. (Digital video has very little tendency to roll)
