I think the short answer is that you can talk to anyone.

That said, I totally get your worry. I am old in Debian, but still
remember the same concerns when I first got involved.

I sincerely hope that you will look back at this debcamp/debconf with
utter joy - because that is the engine on which Debconf is fuelled:
Joy of gathering with likeminded folks.
