ISTR that in some years the name tags allowed to add some free-form text which might help for finding people e.g. over lunch or dinner.(Not sure how this works this year.) Other than that I could image that setting up a wiki page might be helpful.
It's very simple and low-tech (but also reasonably doable and reasonably cheap). If we had coloured dot stickers you could just assign some broad interests to some colours/shapes and tell people with similar interests to grab a sticker for their badge and document their meanings on some wiki page.
In the past some teams also handed out some stickers for badges, so that if someone wants to find someone in the team, it's easy to do.
This wouldn't be broad enough to cover topic as broad as Marc described, but usually when you find 2-3 interests match, there's usually a dozen more.
