Re: bathhouses

OK, all this talk of Korean bath houses reminds me of my first trip to Seoul.

I was attending a Digital Equipment Corporation User's Group (DECUS) conference in the mid-1980s and during my talk at the conference I mentioned that I was going to a local bathhouse.

After my talk I was approached by three young men. I was probably about 35 at the time and they were more along the lines of their early twenties. They told me, in very halting English, that they would be willing to accompany me to the bath house.

Although I had read about the bath houses I had never been before so I welcomed the opportunity for some locals to show me the ropes.

We went to the bath house, to the locker rooms, undressed and went to the baths. We had a very warm and relaxing time at the bath house, sharing a large tub and after several hours of relaxing we got out of the baths and dressed to leave.

My friends took me back to my hotel (just a short distance away) so I would not get lost.

Then they accompanied me up to my room.

It was about then that I realized they were all gay and were willing to join me in my room.

I was not out at the time so I gently and kindly thanked them for the evening, but did not invite them in.

Twenty-eight years later I reminisce, wonder what happened to them and think that it was definitely an opportunity lost.
