Re: [Debconf-discuss] Don't have a computer? Please hurry!

Hi,

Rodrigo (good point Rodrigo!) made a wiki page about imports for a congress (later, I will double check the information with some custom broker at the airport).

reminds me that when people suggested we brought extra laptops to
donate to impoverished hackers, others mentioned there could be
complications at the customs for people carrying two computers. Has
that concern been resolved?

1. You don't mention to customs that you carry more than one laptop with you.
2. You press a button on semaphore and if it's green, you go out
without further questions or anything.
3. If you got red, you only show your luggage, this is, you don't need
to show the contents of backpack. If the customs agent ask you to show
the content of your backpack, you show him the stuff. If he asks why
you have two laptops within you, you state that you will back the two
laptops with you (this is, you won't sell that laptop or gift to any
mexican). If they insist that you should pay for the extra laptop, you
have two options:

1. You state that you get it for only USD$250 (since you can have up
to USD$300 dlls of stuff, without paying any tax).
2. You choose the cheapper one, and they will charge you 17%.

You are able to get some stuff into mexico for free, if you come by
airplane; some of the stuff you don't pay taxes for "import" will be:

* 1 Personal Laptop
* 1 Personal music player (ipod, cdplayer, etc)
* 1 photo camera
* 1 Video camera
* Sport stuff
* Up to USD $ 300 dlls of general stuff.

Good luck,
M
