You can use http://users.tkk.fi/~tajyrink/wireless.html as a starting
point. The page could still be better, as I don't know the exact details
about what is Good from the free software point of view. It might be that
those not having a host CPU have a possibility of having DFSG-drivers?
(binary firmware, even if it can be freely distributed, couldn't be included in main so the card is dead even if the GPL-drivers are there)

I've used myself Ralink's RT2500-based PCMCIA-card with success, though
only with WEP. I've also one Zydas zd1211-based usb stick but have had
more fiddling with its (open source) drivers as they're still quite beta.
