Did you try whether growisofs does not use
DAO automatically if the media is blanked fast ?

It depends on the drive whether this state
is recognized properly.
But if it is recognized then you can get your
result without wrapper by just using media which
are prepared by
  dvd+rw-format -blank /dev/...
(i.e. no -blank=full)
or by
  cdrecord -v dev=... blank=fast
