How to get unique serial number for CD/DVD?

I'm using linux 2.4.

Is there a way (through cdrecord, dvd+rw-tools, ...) to get a globally
unique serial number of the mounted media (CD or DVD), assuming CD and DVD
have one?

I'm not talking about the media id (make/model of media) but something which
will uniquely identify a particular CD/DVD.
