growisofs wont overwrite isofs from script

from my backup script i get this:

FATAL: /dev/dvd already carries isofs!

while when the same backup script runs from the command line it
only warns and then writes:

WARNING: /dev/dvd already carries isofs!
About to execute 'mkisofs -quiet -J -R
/tmp/backup.ebsVK3/lukas-2004-09-29-full-compressable.0.tar.rz
/tmp/backup.ebsVK3/lukas-2004-09-29-full-compressable.1.tar.rz
/tmp/backup.ebsVK3/lukas-2004-09-29-full-compressable.2.tar.rz
/tmp/backup.ebsVK3/lukas-2004-09-29-full-uncompressable.0.tar

/dev/dvd: "Current Write Speed" is 2.4x1385KBps.
builtin_dd: 2002688*2KB out @ average 2.4x1385KBps
/dev/dvd: flushing cache
/dev/dvd: stopping de-icing
/dev/dvd: writing lead-out

like this i have to do the full backup by hand all the time and
the logic which detects if i would overwrite a recent backup is
useless. this is not what i want, so how can i make it overwrite
existing filesystems?
