cdrecord fails with SCSI burner

After upgrading to SuSE 9.1, kernel 2.6.5, burning CDs with my old
Philips CDD522 (2-speed, no rude comments please) SCSI burner no longer
works.

Thinking this may be due to SusE's butchered version, I tried Jörg's:

Same problem.

The 2 scanners on the same SCSI bus work fine as before. I can mount
media in the CDD522 just fine. The drive is built like a brick
sh**house and just works. No need wearing out the new burner when
there's plenty of time. A bit ironic really that working stuff is
forced on the scrap heap because of Linux problems, given the latter's
reputation as saviour of old hardware.
