Maybe... Although the discs I have now are RICOHJPN/W11, which are
supposed to be pretty good, and are on the campatibility page for my
drive.

I've used dvd+rw-format and growisofs without the dvd-compat option
before, so maybe that's what left the discs unusable...
  

I was thinking that it's a good deal cheaper to try a new brand than a new drive. If it works you solve the problem, if not you have one more media for your new drive.
