Short summary, local copy and link to the originating site,

It's mkisofs patch. It's not included into official distribution of
mkisofs, because we failed to reach consensus with maintainer that it's
a worthy extention [which we, Patrick and me, believe it is and I do
recommend it].

Yes. But once you give up the compression, tar is easy to trade for
opportunity of streaming data directly to media and "seamless"
multi-sessioning.

Well, you naturally won't be able to reach same media utilization as
with compression, but overhead is hardly different from what you would
have on any other file system. A.
