This is true if you specify the video driver in xorg.conf, but if you
don't, X will fall back to fbdev automagically.  Consider moving your
xorg.conf out of the way temporarily.

You can also do that before rebooting.

No need to reboot twice.  Just restart X, e.g. with
"/etc/init.d gdm restart".
