I am reassigning this report to the X.Org maintainers in the hope that 
they can help you. This is not really an installer issue, but an 
X-configuration issue.

For X.Org maintainers: logs are included in the original report.

X.Org has become a lot smarter at configuring itself, but in your case it 
seems not to have done the right thing.

You could check for differences between your Sarge and Etch X 
configuration files. That may provide some clues.
