When I start xfig it complains like this:

then during editing if I select a font (all the fonts I tried), xfig complains when I click somewhere to start entering text:

or if I select say helvetica:

and the courier:n

So I can't do much with xfig.
I haven't used it for awhile so don't know when it broke, but it used to work.
