/usr/X11R6/bin/X is the Xwrapper, which allows non-root users to start X
manually (if configured accordingly by root). It will run the X server
pointed to by /etc/X11/X.
The fact that pointing /usr/X11R6/bin/X to the Xorg seems to have fixed
your problem could mean either:
* /etc/X11/X doesn't point to /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg on your system.
If so, you should fix this, as the next upgrade of
xserver-common will restore the Xwrapper binary.
* The Xwrapper is broken.
