Trying to load the "U.S. English w/ deadkeys" layout results in a dialog
box complaining of an XKB error and asking to report the results of
running the following programs:

$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
 layouts = [us+us_intl,us,us_intl]
 model = pc104
 overrideSettings = false
 options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
 update_handlers = []

$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us+us_intl", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us+us_intl,us", ",", "grp:alts_toggle"

The results of running gconftool-2 before trying to add the "U.S.
English w/ deadkeys" layout is:

$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
 layouts = [us+us_intl,us]
 model = pc104
 overrideSettings = false
 options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
 update_handlers = []

This leads me to believe that gnome-keyboard-properties is trying to
load the us_intl layout, which is no longer valid (since XFree 4.3.0 I
think). The correct way to obtain an "U.S. English w/ deadkeys" layout
in the new XFree-modular-xkb-layout-system is to load the "us+us_intl"
layout, which can be seen in the gconftool-2 results above because it's
what Gnome inherited from the XFree86 configuration (XF86Config-4).

I suspect this might be the case for a number of other layouts too, but
fixing the us_intl mess would already help a number of speakers of
accented latin languages (Portuguese, Spanish,...) that have american
keyboards.

BTW, it'd be nice if the "Avaliable layouts" and the "Selected layouts"
boxes included the id of the layout (e.g. "(us_intl)") beside the layout
labels (e.g. "U.S. English w/ deadkeys") so that users have a better
chance of understanding what is going on.
