I don't believe that they belong in upstream CVS at all.  A while ago,
I created full modular packaging (libraries, fonts, documentation, the
server), although the server was still built from the old tree as it
is very hard to get a modular server build right (and you lose GL
support in the progress).  If you're interested, you're welcome to all
my sources.

I was going for the 'replace' angle, since all the binary packages were
the same.

Well, if you're interested, I could tar up all my sources and throw them
