The cards don't ship any microcode, and the DRM doesn't work without it.

No, Herbert has crippled the kernel packages. Of course, the DDX drivers
could deal better with this, at least the radeon driver does in DRI CVS.
I could dig up a patch, but I'd prefer if those who insisted on
crippling things did...
