It is meant to use be the language name transliterated into English,
not translated. It originally was used to help some browsers that were
unable to include characters from outside the current page's encoding
(old Netsacpe browsers, mainly) so that the users of these still could
find their own language page (given that they could read the latin
charcters, that is).
