	Well, good point. If you follow the script you will see that 
it takes a look at the english source dir Makefile's, going back to the
topdir, then to the *english* source dir and then forward to our current
dir.
	I think it could be easily change to go to another source dir
different from the english one just turning this into a variable, which
defaults to 'english' but which can be given through the same wml call
something like

#use wml::debian::translation-check translation="1.4" language="english"
