You may find this useful in the current discussion.
On gNewSense the way the binary blobs are removed is with the following:
http://svn.gnewsense.svnhopper.net/gnewsense/builder/trunk/gen-kernel
gNewSense is about taking blobs out down stream two steps from Debian.
