In case anyone was wondering, the solution for me was to use two packages
from Debian experimental:
lightdm_1.4.0-1_amd64.deb
lightdm-gtk-greeter_1.3.1-1_amd64.deb
Actually I used the source code packages for this version of lightdm and
applied these two patches to get its broken language selector to work:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1019314
After compiling lightdm, the two packages work just fine for me on
wheezy. They're small and have just a few dependencies.
