I didn't think that the profile has anything to do with it but followed your 
advice anyway. For what it's worth I experienced strange behaviour because of 
botched profiles before. But no luck, same problem with a new user with 
default settings.

Right now I'm trying on another box with the same Wheezy installation. If it 
works there, I shall have something to work on and to analyze the differences.

Weird, because dvdauthor has not been updated around that time. (???)
It is still the same version as before the harddisk swap.
