Not all of our situations are the same. Some read debian-user via web interfaces, without threading, or are new or prospective users who have not found great mail clients, or who may be subscribing to a high-volume mailing list for the first time. I personally develop Debian mostly from behind a dialup modem link, so every offtopic debian-user post has the potential to delay a package upload. -- see shy jo
