It seems you are not alone:

Why I dumped Debian Squeeze's Chromium for the Chrome browser from 
Google's repository

But your situation is the same with other browsers, like Firefox. Today's 
browsers upgrade to a new version in just two months (!) and you are left 
with an obsolete package for several years. I'm now seriously considering 
using the upstream packages for the major browsers because of their new 
agressive update policy that -sadly- cannot be followed by Debian.
