Anyway, since American pudding is nothing like British pudding we
altered the phrase.  And now our way is the right way, gosh darn it!!!

As an American, I think we should honor the long history of this proverb by at
least *knowing* the full form, since "the proof is in the pudding" makes
little sense.  "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." is a bit of an
archaic wording, but it does make sense; you don't know the quality of pudding
before you taste it.

Or... you begin to eat it, see toenail clippings and proclaim, "The proof is *in* the pudding: it's inedible!!"
