I started out by creating partitions and then selecting them for RAID.
When I selected the "finish" option whereby they are written to disk,
the installer did allow that option unless I had designated / and /boot
partitions.

- From the nature of your question I assume that what I tried to do is
possible, but I did not know how.  The Installation Guide is not very
enlightening.  So, I will try again with greater persistence.
