Another idea, is pdl which is a very powerful math system based
upon perl. you can do major matrix calculations and data
visualization all in a very perlish way.
it was built by astronomers who wanted a free matlab based on
a great and natural scripting language.
it is awesome.
i also use maxima and xmaxima and octave.
