True, redhat has always been a big supporter/contributor to linux
development, but so has debian.

Also true, but so is debian. I see no good reason for a move like that
but sometimes we just have to do what the manager says. I hope it
doesn't create too many problems for you.. :)
Do your managers know debian? Maybe ask them to have a look at the
website and see what it's all about (although it's not easy to see just
by looking at the website).
