Sane has multiple backends that support a diverse array of transports,
including USB. Install the sane-utils package and type:
$ scanimage -L
at a terminal prompt to show detected scanners. Your user account should
be a member of the 'scanner' group for USB scanners to show up.
Sane also has a nice web page[0] that details scanner support.
