I had missed this when I sent my last message: Your MTU (Maximum
Transfer Unit) is a bit small. Try to run as root

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500

and check if this improves your external connection speed. You can use
http://www.testmy.net/ to measure your download and upload rates.
