To be precise, they were for the absence of conflict.  This is not
necessarily peace.  In fact, it quite rarely is.

It seems quite pervasive on the left of the political spectrum
(regardless of nationality) to equate the absence of conflict with
peace.  Just as a little historical note, appeasement has already been
tried and has been found to not generally work.
