Hi Dan,
Maybe the disk is the issue? Perhaps reboot with a knoppix and examine
the disk with fsck /dev/hda1 or similar? If there are disk problems,
reformat and install again because your procedure was correct. The other
option is that the disk image you used or the packages have some odd
errors. And in that case, you'd file bugs on the disk image or some
package. The apt-get error did not give enough detail to give any
comments.
