camera? Or was she trying to read the memory stick from a card reader. I find it strange that a USB stick is not readable anytime these days.

It was not a USB stick, it was a memory stick from a digital camera.
She had a USB dock for the memory stick. Windows recognizes and
mounts it fine. Debian won't recognize it.

There could be a temporary problem with hal/udev but it usually gets sorted out in a few days time. What version of Debian does she have on

thread. Actually, it's more pressing to get rid of the horrible
mouse she's having to use.
