I have a similar problem, except that

1. I run Etch, not Sid
2. GTK apps run locally behave fine, but those run with X forwarding
   over an ssh connection behave as you describe.

I haven't identified the cause of the problem, but my money is on the
recent libcairo2 upgrade.
