I disagree with that mindset.

Kernel 2.6 is "hidden", but running linux26 would install a 2.6
kernel. At the CD boot prompt, typing "help" (or maybe <F1>) would
have shown you the options.

In that case, install Ubuntu 6.06 on the machine.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.
