I eventually solved this problem by purging the following packages
faad libavcodeccvs51 libavutilcvs0 libavutilcvs49 libfaad2-0
libpostproccvs51 mencoder mozilla-mplayer mplayer
and reinstalling mplayer, mencoder, mozilla-player and faad. The
mplayer command works again. Mysterious!
