I'm all for learning more about file systems. Your experiences with 
ext3 are not mine, but I did have a problem with ext3 that echoes 
your concerns.

fsck would not run against an ext3 file system no matter what I did. 
It kept reporting "journal says it's ok, so it's ok". I had forgotten 
about "shutdown -fsck_it_when_it_comes_back_up" and the "tune2fs" 
option to both set a check interval and then tell it it's exceeded 
that interval already. Oh well, 20/20 hindsight.

There certainly is still room for improvement in file systems.

Does anyone have personal experience with "jfs"? It seems to compare 
well in the tests.
