Check this. boot the computer and run nvram to put in a wakeup time say 30 minutes away, then reboot and go immediately into the the bios setup and check what the bios thinks the wake time should be. I wonder if maybe you've got a bad CMOS battery? the failure to wake after 220v power failure makes me wonder. Also, the inconsistency of your results makes me think that as well. finally, as far as I know, the kernel change shouldn't affect it at all, so long as the data is getting written to the right places. Definitely check that battery... provided you have set the wakeup time before shutting down, it shouldn't matter what method you use.
