I did find out what was causing my problem... no loopback device was setup... 
of course after doing #ifconfig lo 127.0.01 up 
i was fine... also added lines to /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

i am re-posting this in case someone searches for similar errors... maybe save them some time...
i'll also file a bug (against what i am not sure) to see if "connect: invalid argument" is a proper error response from ping.
