wireless access suddenly broken not fixed

I still don't have wireless access from sid potentially from an upgrade. This was discussed in a recent thread with no conclusion. I have no idea for further diagnosis. ifup eth1 gives:

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; No such device.
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2B) :
GET failed on device eth1 ; No such device.
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; No such device.
